Acts 7:2 And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
Seven attributes of God:
The New Testament gives us seven descriptive attributes of God and with each one we can see some of the provision of God for us. God’s provision for us goes beyond just physical needs as we are told in these attributes or titles.
God of glory:
It was the God of glory that called Abraham out of Ur of the Chaldees (Acts 7:2) as told by Stephen before he was stoned to death. Luke tells us that just before dying Stephen saw the glory of God as he looked up into heaven. Paul tells us we are changed “from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” (2 Cor 3:18). God works on us to be more like Jesus.
God of patience & Consolation:
When speaking to the believers in Rome to urge them to “be like minded toward another” he called upon God Who is perfect patience and consolation to grant this attribute to believers so that they might exhibit the same toward one another? Patience is part of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22), it is rooted in God Himself.
God of all comfort:
Paul calls God the One Who is able to comfort us when we are going through trials and tribulations. God comes and gives us rest when the world is unable to do so. We are, then to comfort others that enter the same or similar trials as we have been through (2 Cor 1:4). Paul also says that the truth of the resurrection and our being changed is something we are to comfort one another with (1 Thes 4:18).
God of peace:
Five times God is called the “God of peace” and thus He satisfies the need for peace in the soul of His children (Phil 4:9). In a world that looks for and strives for peace, the answer to peace is the Prince of Peace.
God of all grace:
Peter experienced grace from God and he knew that grace flows freely from God (1 Pet 5:10). We are saved by grace, sanctified by grace and we live day to day by God’s wonderful grace. We are told to grow in grace (2 Pet 3:18) and we can therefore go from grace to grace as we live (Jn 1:16).
God of love:
We all need love and God is love (1 Jn 4:8). God sheds his love abroad in our hearts (Ro 5:5) which enables us to love those we have difficulty loving. Love is the first mentioned part of the Spirit’s fruit (Gal 5:22) and we can have this love in our lives because He is the God of love and peace (2 Cor 13:11).
God of hope:
We are told that hope maketh not ashamed (Ro 5:5) and hope is not something that we can see (Ro 8:24), but God is the God of hope for us (Rom 15:13). Through the indwelling Spirit we can be filled with all joy and peace in believing” in our God.
