God’s word 1

Deuteronomy 4:2  Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

It is truly God’s word:

Various Scriptures declare that the Bible is authored by God – Moses wrote what God told him to say and wrtite to trhe people (Lev 1:1). Jeremiah spoke and wrote what God told him (Jer 1:4). John wrote what he was instructed to write as given to him from the resurrected Lord (Rev 1:1). Paul wrote that all Scripture is breathed out by God (2 Tim 3:16). Paul also told the Thessalonica believers that they were receiving and believing the very word of God (1 Thes 2:13).

Warnings of tampering with God’s word:

God gives us four such warning about tampering with His word.

Deut 4:2 – Adding to God’s word by saying more than it says – Eve did this somewhat when she said, “neither shall ye touch it” in referring to the forbidden fruit. Diminishing from it would be similar to Eve’s saying “lest ye die”; God said, “ye shall surely die”. Later in Deut 12:32 God reiterated the former command only this time in reference to false gods and the way people committed abominations to them – sacrifice of children and prostitution.

Rev 22:18-19 – God presented an even greater pronouncement against anyone adding to taking away from His word. Here He declares that He will the plagues of the book to them and take their names out of the book of life and also their part (home) in heaven. Then He adds that He will also take away other things written in His book – probably the blessings and promises. This warning would also be relevant to anyone who would claim to have a new revelation from God that would lead people differently from His word, perhaps adhering g to another book supposedly given by that new revelation. Notice, God was careful to say the “words’ not the concept of His written word.

Prov 30:5-6 – Near the middle of the Bible is a warning to any who would try to discredit God’s word. God says that anyone that tries to discredit His word, they will be proved a liar and be ashamed.  Such as been the case with people who have tried to disprove the Bible in the past and thus it will be for those in the present and future. i.e. cities of Sodom and Gomorrah; the rise of Russia as a powerful nation; the return of Christ, and etc.
