Beguiling words

Colossians 2:4   And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.

Beware of guile: Col 2:4

Prior to Paul’s admonition to be rooted he warns of being led away thru guile. Anyone can beguile us with words that are designed to capture our reason. The word that the Holy Spirit had Paul use in this verse means alongside of reason and is used only one other place (James 1:22). The deception Paul speaks of comes from “enticing words”. It couples the term for reason with persuasion and contains the foundation of our English word Analogy. This deception is accomplished by transferring truth unto an untruth. For example, Jesus warned His disciples that in the last days some would come saying they are Christ, thus transferring the truth of Christ’s return onto their own self – a false Christ. Such is the case that Jehovah’s Witnesses use in propagating their false theology—they mix the truth of the love of God and judgment in hell. They try to use human reasoning to refute the fact of eternal punishment.

The purpose of leaders given by God to the church is so that we are not tossed to and fro by the craftiness of men (Eph 4:14). The WHO and others in our country are declaring they are “Christs” (deliverers for our safety) when in actuality they are working toward our enslavement and control using enticing words of reason and persuasion.

Spoils of war:

We are told to beware of those who would persuade us away from the truth by using deceitful words and reasoning’s that are contrary to God’s revealed word. Paul says they attempt to spoil us through their words. The term spoil carries the idea of something that is the result of a victory in time of war. Our very souls are the spoil of the enemy as he tries to draw us away from truth and righteousness. They argue from a position of worldly ideas and not spiritual. They come in the guise of being spiritual or “Christian” in order to capture our minds and hearts Peter tells us to gird up our minds so that we will ne be allured away from our stedfastness in Christ (2 Pet 3:17).

Profane and vain babblings:

Paul gave warning to Timothy about profane and vain babblings – profane carries the idea of stepping over the threshold or in the discussion of doctrine going beyond what Scripture reveals as truth. Perhaps the idea that God used evolution to create. The word vain has the idea of a “fruitless discussion”. Something that is not profitable to engage in for spiritual health and wellbeing. Just prior to this Paul instructed Timothy to rightly divide the word and to study to be approved unto God. Paul seems to indicate that these fruitless discussions may destroy godliness (1 Tim 4:7).

False science: (1 Tim 6:20)

Paul urges Timothy and us to avoid the oppositions false knowledge (science means knowledge). Paul says the result will be that ungodliness will increase; error will eat away at spiritual health and truth like gangrene. It will not be mass exodus right away but soon it will result in such things as those church leaders he mentioned who ended up believing the resurrection was past (2 Tim 2:17).
