Glorious liberty

Romans 8:21  Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Liberty from corruption:

God has subjected the whole of creation to the “bondage of corruption” – animate or inanimate. Everything is governed by a law of decay – a law of such universal scope that it is recognized by a law of basic science. This is the law of entropy, stipulating that everything tends to disintegrate and die. All in the world is corruptible – man, beast, things. These type bodies cannot enter heaven (1 Cor 15:50-54), they must be changed like to Christ’s glorified body (Phil 3:21).

Our Liberator:

Christ died for our sin (all mankind’s sin) and defeated death so that someday our groaning creation can be delivered from the corruption and death it is now subject to. All creation will enjoy the benefits of the redemption of the children of God at Christ’s return to rule over the earth (Isa 11:6-9; 65:25)

Present liberty:

We can experience a type of that future liberty by reading and studying God’s word (James1:25). When we become children of God thru new birth the Holy Spirit comes to indwell us and we experience certain amount/type of liberty (2 Cor 3:17). We can be set free from the power and bondage pf sin; the corrupting influences of this present evil world; the fear and worries that the enemy tries to throw upon us. We are free from the burden of the law (ceremonial law) to be righteous before God (the offering of animals, washings, rites, etc.). Ro 10:4.

Don’t abuse our liberty:

If we do not pursue holiness and total surrender to God in commitment and discipleship, we could abuse this liberty (Gal 5:13). Sometimes we refuse to act lovingly toward other Christians because we claim to be set free from all regulation and standards. Paul warns the Galatians that they not use it as an occasion to the flesh and become entangled again with the bondage of the flesh.

Stand fast:

We are not to abuse our liberty in Christ and promote lust or any other desire that exalts itself above Christ. Since we are set free we are stand fast in that freedom – persevere in it. We are to take our stand for Christ, the Word and holiness. Jesus said whom the Son sets free are free indeed and to whom or what we yield our self to obey we become in bondage to it.
