Christ the King

Luke 19:12-14   He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. {13}  And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. 14}  But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

Jesus in the parable:

After the conversion of Zacchaeus before entering Jerusalem, Jesus spoke this parable about a noble man going into a far country to receive a kingdom and then return. There were some who thought that the kingdom would come after Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last time and He would assume the role of king and oust the Romans and reign over Israel. They did not understand that Jesus was a King already and that the kingdom He would set up on this earth was not of this world system and order but one He would establish at the end of the age.

When questioned by Pilate, Jesus said that He was born to be a King but that His kingdom was not of this world order (Jn 18:37, 36). When the magi came seeking Jesus they said they were seeking the King of the Jews (Matt 2:2; Lu 1:32, 33). Jesus came the first time to seek citizens and rulers for His kingdom to come (Lu 19:10, 13). The devil is declared to be god or king over this world system (Jn 12:31, 40; 14:30; Eph 2:2). Jesus was King before He came to earth and reigns as King now over all the earth.

King of all the earth:

Psa 47:7-9; 95:3, 5 declares God (Jesus) as King of the earth. He reigns over the creation He has created and even though satan tried to overthrow Him, He remains King over the earth.

King of the Jews:

The first mention of Him being King in the New Testament is King of the Jews (Matt 2:2). He has called the Jews out of obscurity through Abraham and made them into a nation – His chosen people and He will reign over them, although right now they refused Him (Jn 19:15).

King of redemption:

Psa 74:12 says that God is King of old and He works salvation to those who receive Him. Paul speaks of being brought into His kingdom through redemption and forgiveness (Col 1:13, 14).

King of all ages:

The Psalmist said that He is King of old but also King of all ages, forever and ever (Psa 10:16). Paul says that He is the only King eternal (1Tim 1:17).

King of saints:

The Psalmist said God is his king (Psa 84:3) and in the Revelation He is declared to be the King of all saints (Rev. 15:3). He will be King to everyone and anyone who is willing to humble themselves before Him and allow Him to reign and rule in their lives here and now. Then, when life is over, He will be our King eternal in the heavens and the New Jerusalem.

Paul says He is “. . .  the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;” 1 Tim 6:15. Therefore, we can say, “. . . Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.” Rev 5:13.
