Christmas

Luke 2:6-7 (KJV)
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Christmas Day has almost arrived and I can almost hear the laughter, squeals of delight and expressions of thanks as children and adults alike open presents from one another. Too often we try to enjoy this day through sleepy eyes and worn out bodies – we have exhausted ourselves trying to get ready for this day and in a few minutes it is all over.

God laid His gift to the world in a manger in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago and that gift is still thrilling those who find Him today. Some advertisers say their gift is one that keeps on giving, but in reality, it is God’s Gift that keeps on giving. Jesus was a man born to die – die for our sins and those of the world so that “whosoever will” may come and receive the forgiveness of sins and know they are in God’s family and have a home in heaven by and by.

Do we really appreciate what he did for us because He continues to give of Himself – He sits at the right hand of God to intercede for us as John said – “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous”  Paul chimes is telling us that there is no other that can intercede for us but Jesus – “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” He is actively interceding for the lost as we pray for them, so God’s Gift is the One that keeps on giving. I appreciate that fact because I know around Christmas things can get busy and we often get “out of sorts” by all the hustle and bustle of preparing for the day.

We must be careful not to allow the preparations for that “dream” family occasion or meal become an idol and forget to focus on Him Who is the center of it all. If our plans and preparations cause us to get too out of sorts and have bad attitudes we may be in danger of allowing that dream to take the position of an idol in our life. Jesus is not too concerned that the cookies turn out perfect or the napkins are arranged perfectly, or even if the turkey is juicy and all the lights light; He is more concerned that we keep our focus on Him and make sure He has our whole heart. God never commanded us to celebrate the birthday of Jesus, but I am sure He does not mind – as long as we do not focus on the date and day and not on His unspeakable Gift.

Have a very Merry Christmas and enjoy what it all means.
