1 Corinthians 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
Owning and operating a car is important in our society today. For young people getting that first car is exciting, but then after we buy one we have to pay for it and also pay to keep it running. Then paying for insurance to be legal to operate the car -–all this amounts to money and time, but it is exciting to get that first car. There are principles and laws of operating a car and we can relate them to our spiritual life.
Dependable
Everyone wants a car that is dependable – one that will get you where you’re going and get you back home again. There is nothing more frustrating than a car that you never know if it is going to start or run properly. Christians should be dependable – keep their word, not neglect duty, put God first.
Good steering
A car that is able to stay on the road – the steering mechanism all in good working roder. You have to be able to keep the car on the road to prevent a wreck or steering into the path of another car. Don’t get distracted while driving. What do you do when the other driver does not dim his lights at night? Lu 11:34; Col 3:2. Don’t be distracted by entertainment and allurements of the world. Keep your eyes on the road to heaven and don’t get distracted or wrecked by faulty steering.
GPS
The days of road maps are over; everyone either using a GPS or their phones to get directions to wherever they are going. The Bible is the road map for Christians Psa 119:105. Christ is the Lighthouse to point out the rocks and dangers of the journey. Scripture addressed every area of our life – we do well to tke heed to it.
Good brakes
Being able to stop your vehicle is important – there are times we need to stop to stay alive. There are times we need to slow down or stop. There are rest areas along life’s journey to heaven Psa 46:10. There may be another traveler along the way we need to stop to assist and good brakes are needed to stop properly.
Good battery
The Holy Spirit indwells every believer and we need to be sure there is good connection as well as proper charge in our own battery. We need to keep charged up and not allow our battery to lose its charge. Keep the Spirit fresh in your life by prayer, Bible reading and spiritual events.
Fuel
We need to keep our vehicle fueled up and keep it from dirt or other things that can clog the flow of fuel to the engine. Proper doctrine is necessary for our living and understanding that keeps us in right relationship with God.
Maintenance
Preventive maintenance needs to be regular in order to keep the vehicle in proper running order. Some states have yearly inspections to insure vehicles are properly maintained. The same goes for our spiritual – Bible study, Sunday School and revival service, to keep a check on our progress.
Are you up and running or have you been hauled off to the junk yard?
